World Cup arrives in Barking and Dagenham

Forget Harry Kane, Lionel Messi and Neymar. Now is your chance to become the leading marksman ahead of the 2018 FIFA World Cup.

Barking and Dagenham are getting well in to the spirit of things ahead of the showpiece event in Russia and will be holding a ‘find a football’ competition where residents can win an official World Cup football plus prizes donated by Everyone Active.

Each weekday, from the start to the end of the World Cup (no matter where England’s journey ends!) an official World Cup football will be hid somewhere in the borough waiting to be found.

By the time the World Cup Final comes around on 15 July, residents would have had the chance to win 22 replica balls.

A picture clue will be posted each day on the Council’s official Facebook and Twitter accounts, with the time the ball is hidden and available to find (a one-hour slot each day) – so make sure you follow on social media to get those crucial hints!

The winning recipient will win the ball and a mystery extra prize, which has been donated by sponsors Everyone Active, who manage both Abbey and Becontree Heath Leisure Centres.

There will be winners all-round as everyone who arrives at the correct location during the promotional hour, but is too late to find the football, will receive a free day pass to use at either of the two leisure centres.

‘Barking and Dagenham is determined to play a big part and this special competition will help get everyone active as they search for the missing balls’

The World Cup might be taking place in Russia, but there is no reason why residents in Barking and Dagenham cannot get into the swing of the action and show their competitive edge.

Councillor Maureen Worby, Cabinet Member for Social Care and Health Integration said: “The World Cup is always a memorable occasion and is a great way to bring the nation together.

“Barking and Dagenham is determined to play a big part in that and this special competition will help get everyone active as they search for the missing balls.

“There are some great prizes on offer including a free day pass for everyone who finds the right location within the specified time, so I would urge everyone to get involved.”

Duncan Cogger, Everyone Active’s regional contract manager, said: “We are really pleased to be supporting this competition.

“World-wide sporting events such as this are a fantastic way to raise the profile of sports and activity more generally, and I hope more people are encouraged to get active on the back of it.

“This competition is a really fun way of getting people out and about exploring their local community. I’d encourage everyone to take part and be in with the chance of winning some brilliant prizes.”

This ‘find a football’ competition is being run by Barking and Dagenham Council and is in no way endorsed by or associated with the FIFA World Cup and its official sponsors
